Hendy Pool
The county council has now had three quotes from construction and demolition contractors to remove the pool and they have awarded one of the companies to start the work so the end of the pool and an era is fast approaching.
The pool committee has been working hard meeting with grant officers who have been drawing up plans to regenerate the park who have identified grant sources that the community council would be eligible to apply for, as a result of this the community council were asked by the pool committee and the grant officer designing the plans, would they consider applying for grants on behalf of the committee in partnership with the county council
The community council agreed to this request subject to the pool committee giving them money to use as match funding, obviously the community council would also consider donating to match funding once costings of the regeneration works was completed as currently the plans have not been costed
At last weeks meeting of the pool committee, there was a discussion about the funds raised to save the pool, it was decided because members of the community and village have been giving so generously since the pool closer in 2002 to save the pool, it would be necessary to now hold a public meeting to show the plans of the regeneration of the park and to ask the community to agree how to spend the money and would they be happy to donate the funds raised, to the community council, to be ring fenced for the hendy park regeneration,
The pool committee felt this would be appropriate because money had been given by the community very generously, during the campaign to save the pool
There were two consultant reports conducted on behalf of Carmarthen County Council, which stated that the pool was beyond economical repair
In 2006 the pool committee conducted an independent feasibility study using hyder consultants who came up with a similar view, the study also consulted with the wider community with a three day exhibition in the village and 98% of the responses were in favour of a community park with a modern splash park whilst only 40% of the responses were in favour of keeping the pool
After receiving the feasibility report the county council stated if you wish to save the pool we will offer it to the community group for a peppercorn rent, but there were not enough volunteers willing to take on the health and safety risk and the mammoth task of finding a huge grant to rebuild the pool which had been deemed beyond economical repair, the community council also declined the counties offer to lease the pool and to take on the associated responsibilities of the pool.
The public meeting and exhibition of the park regeneration will be taking place in April, once details have been confirmed a date will be advertised well in advance.
CHAMPION CHIPPY
Llanedi Community Council at its last meeting has resolved to make a grant of £110 to a young carpenter, Gareth Wyn Evans of Llanedi, to support him in his bid to win the WorldSkills Competition to be held later this year in Calgary, Canada.
Gareth, 21, who completed his carpentry apprenticeship at Coleg Sir Gâr in 2006, is already a multiple champion. In 2007, he came first in the Welsh regional stage of the national skills competition, Skill Build, winning the Gold Medal. The Skill Build competition promotes excellence for youth in the construction industry. He went on to the UK national final in that year and again came away with the first prize and another Gold Medal. Amazingly, he succeeded in repeating those achievements in 2008, once more winning, firstly, the regional competition and, secondly, the UK national final and receiving the Gold Medal.
Gareth has now been selected as a member of the UK squad for the Calgary event, where there will be competitors representing 49 countries in 40 different skills with Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals awarded for each discipline.
The Members of the Council were immensely proud of Gareth’s achievements to date and delighted to be able to assist him in his forthcoming venture, where he will be representing the UK, Wales and his local community on the international stage
