Uneconomical with the truth

The Plaid Leader of Carmarthen County Council group has been at it yet again, he has been uneconomical with the truth,

Today in the Llanelli Star 8th April he has responded to my letter, and in his letter he has stated the Plaid group did not bring a wish list of efficiency savings to the full council

I thought I should share my previous post first which carried my letter printed in the Star last week

"letters to the editor

i read the letter "plaid voted to cap tax rise" in march 18th edition of the star, Out of all the county councils across wales Carmarthenshire has set one of the lowest council tax rises, and set it below the recommended assembly guidelines by taking money out of the reserves, Reserves are in the county councils budgets because they are earmarked for projects over the coming years and are there for emergencies and unforeseen events, if we as a council had taken more out of the reserves it would mean we would have to stop some of the projects or at worse make redundancies or cut front line services, the county council scrutiny committees were asked to look at efficiency savings and the opposition leader Peter Hughes Griffiths, wrote a letter to the leader of the council and Mark James stating that the plaid cymru group would not take part in any efficiency savings and in one of the scrutiny's that were looking for efficiency savings which would help next years budgets, the plaid councillors abstained and didn't make any suggestions for savings , but yet at the county council budget setting debate Peter Hughes and several Plaid Councillors got up and gave a wish list of efficiency savings, had they taken part in their duties and elected role and suggested these savings earlier in the year at the appropriate times and meetings, then perhaps the council tax could have been reduced lower than what we had set this year. Reserves are there for projects and emergencies, take account this winter there was a need for extra gritting and resources to keep snow blocked roads open, if reserves are depleted next winter the county would not be able to do such a sterling job, also this year all the plaid councillors voted to buy a large piece of land, which the council hope will create much needed jobs and development for an area and village in the county, if there were no reserves again opportunities like this would not be able to take place in the future. Yes the plaid group did vote against the current percentage increase, but if their option had been accepted it would have been detrimental to front line services and emergencies similar to the two examples i just highlighted above. They should have acted sooner instead of making rash decisions like we are not going to make any suggestions for efficiency savings and then later suggest savings and put meetings and decisions on hold at short notice.

After the letter was printed the next day the Evening Post reported on the land deal that I mentioned, its the Old RN Depot site in Llangennech and there's going to be 400 new jobs coming there
http://www.thisissouthwales.co.uk/news/Jobs-boost-U-turn-MoD-site/article-851513-detail/article.html

HUNDREDS of jobs could be on the way to Llanelli after a surprise deal was sealed.

The former Ministry of Defence depot — known as RN — in Llangennech has been bought by Carmarthenshire Council.

It comes after the centre — one half of Llangennech's defence storage and distribution centre — shut down in March last year, ending 19 months of campaigning and lobbying to save it.

There were 190 job losses as a result of the closure — a decision made by the MoD's Defence Storage and Distribution Agency (DSDA).

But, in a surprise turn of events, the Morwg Road depot has already attracted a private investor pledging to bring up to 400 jobs to the town.

Carmarthenshire Council chief executive Mark James said: "This is exciting and good news with the welcome potential of a substantial jobs boost for the town.""

After reading the letter he wrote a letter published today which is very missleading and untruthful

The key statement is in the line "And Plaid Councillors did not give a wish list of Efficiency savings to full council"

What a load of crap?
Excuse my swearing

The minutes of the full council actually recorded his ammendment, these can be read on the county council web site

His wish list included, cutting down on self publicity.... like the community news once a quarter

The use of external consultants to conduct feasibility studies or surveys etc

The scrapping of suport of community events, last year Carmarthen County Council supported the Hendy and Pontarddulais Carnival with a Marquee and some workshops for the children

The removal of water from council offices and the scrapping of the community networks

It annoyed me that he put pen to paper and denied bringing any efficiency savings to the full council at the last hour.
