vandals in hendy

well we made front page of yesterdays evening post with the photo and full story inside, i had emphasised to the reporter that if kids had something to do the wouldn't get bored and i stated that carmarthen county council should invest in hendy swimming pool which would probably see a reduction in vandalism as kids and teenagers would have an activity to participate in?

the story read Bordom blaimed for vandalism and i notice someone posted a comment to the evening post web site under readers comments that this is a ridiculous statement?

if you have a view on this add it to my comments on this page or better still write to the editor, letters published will keep the hendy pool campaign in the lime light.

BOREDOM BLAMED AS VANDALS HIT SHUT HOME

09:00 - 23 July 2007

Young vandals have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to a building in Hendy. The former Llwyngwern home in Heol y Parc was vacated two weeks ago.

But already, every window has been broken, fire extinguishers have been let off, crockery smashed and extensive damage caused throughout.

Police have found gangs of children aged between 10 and 14 on the premises, at evenings and over the past two weekends.

All downstairs windows have been boarded up and there are regular security and police patrols.

However, the youngsters are still causing damage at the property which is up for sale.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: "A security company is conducting 24-hour patrols of the property.

"Police have arrested four people and five others will be helping police with their inquiries.

"Llwyngwern, and its grounds, is a private property and any trespassers will be dealt with accordingly."

Council taxpayers' cash is having to be used for security and repairs.

Hendy community councillor Steve Lloyd-Janes blamed a lack of facilities in the village for the vandalism.

He said: "I am shocked that so much vandalism has occurred.

"It is a shame as it is a heritage building.

"I blame the lack of facilities in Hendy for youngsters for this vandalism.

"There is nothing to do here and the youngsters are causing damage as they are bored."

Parents and residents are being asked to keep an eye on their children and to report any information they have to the police.

Carmarthenshire Council's director of social care and housing Bruce McLernon said: "I strongly condemn the actions of these vandals and would urge anyone with information to contact police.

"We have stepped up our security patrols, as have the police, but we cannot be there around the clock.

"We are asking for the co-operation of the community to stamp out this mindless vandalism which is costing thousands of pounds of taxpayers money."

Witnesses should call 0845 330 2000.

It is ridiculous to blame boredom for this. There were many times when I was bored but didnt resort to vandalism or anything else which gets "blamed" on boredom. If these kids had any respect for other people or themselves they would not be behaving in this way. I am slightly confused that if this building and its grounds are private property why is council tax money being used to repair it?
