I am involved in the Llanelli CAB
I am the current secretary of the Hendy Pool and Parks Committee
I am also a member of the Pontarddulais and Hendy District Carnival Committee. Which will be celebrating its 40th year this year.
I have been a member of USDAW since 1989 and I am the Llanelli Usdaw Union Branch Secretary, I have done a lot of campaigning with Usdaw and I often appear in the quarterly magazine that gets published and sent to Usdaw Members, here's just one example
I have also been Hendy community councillor on Llanedi Community Council since 2004 and as a councillor, I also represent the council as a member of the Hendy School Govenoring Body.

| A Teenager has admitted threatening to set a Hendy pub on fire.The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty at Llanelli Magistrates Court yesterday to a charge of attempted arson at the Red Lion, in Iscoed Road, on Friday evening. Prosecutor Lesley Harbon said the youth threw petrol over the entrance while smoking a cigarette. Andrew Markham, defending, said the youth was very drunk and his father drove him to the police station where he surrendered. The teenager was remanded in custody to a date to be set. |

I write concerning vandalism in Hendy and the county councils comments about deciding on a policy three strikes and out.
This is a concern given that Hendy was highlighted as a possible area that could be affected with the loss of its park under the policy if it came into effect?
What has happened to the society of today? How things have changed? years ago when I was a young teenager, as group of youngsters my friends and I would never resorted to some of the malicious damage that youngsters have caused today.
There are a number of factors, which I believe contribute to and are the root of the problems, in my day the local beat police officer lived in the villages, and even if they were off duty they shopped or socialised in the village, and they knew every youngster and their family, if we were rowdy or up to mischief, our parents would know, before we even got home what we had been up to. Today the police seem to move around and don’t live in the community long enough and a lot of the community residents are unknown to the local officers.
The other major factor is, what is there for the youngsters of today to do, cut backs has seen community facilities vanish, years ago Hendy was the best kept village in the county for three years running, They achieved this because there was community spirit and hardly no vandalism, but there were well maintained facilities like the tennis courts and a park, there was the pool, there was the scouts in the Urdd hall, youngsters had an activity they could participate in.
The Hendy youth of today have no youth clubs, we lost the tennis courts in the 90’s, and the pool is closed and under threat from the county. The village lost its football pitch in a prime spot in the heart of the village, when the county sold it to build houses, which increased its revenue from council taxes. Yes they did give the village an alternative field, but this is across the railway line and has poor access, which now causes residents of
Although the pool committee are campaigning to Save the pool without full support from the county it would be a huge task for the community volunteers to achieve. The committee are conducting a feasibility study for the pool and park area and I believe instead of looking for excuses to remove the facilities in Hendy, Carmarthen County Council needs to look at the root of the causes of the incidents of vandalism and address these, if they cant fund better facilities then maybe they should fund more cameras to view and monitor the areas effected from vandalism.
If they invested money in the pool and park and community facilities in general, they would find vandalism would decrease, as youngsters would not be bored, maybe if the feasibility study for the pool came back positive, the county council might then reconsider its stance around not supporting the project financially, instead of making the committee a verbal promise and offer of a large grant and then reconsidering and denying ever offering the committee any funds. If regeneration of the park and pool became a reality, maybe Hendy could again be in the running for best kept village.

Well we eventually managed to get the llanelli depot operations manager out for first cymru, on friday
He came out and met residents and Nia Griffith MP with Mr John Mcenvoy representing the county councils highways and safety department.
There were some nine residents present and local councillors.
There were three issues which were discussed to great length,the first and biggest issue was the bus stop at Harleyford Road on the post office side. This is a dangerous stop and an accident waiting to happen.
When the county conducted the traffic calming they added an Island outside the funeral directors, to allow the extension of the halt sign on Harlyford Road, because this junction is on a brow of the hill and cars were always parked near the funeral directors, the new island stops this and gives cars exiting Harlyford road a better view.
However its now caused a new hazard with the stop just after the junction, buses as they arrive to the stop are pulling towards the kerb and their near side wheels are travelling over the halt markings, which have been extended past the pavement mark. i'll have to take a photo to explain and show
Anyway they agreed the bus company and mr mcenvoy that this situation is extremely dangerous and they are going to look at extending the pavement into the white hashed no parking signs, this will keep buses away from crossing over the white halt sign.
The second issue again arised when the traffic calming was put in, the mini roundabout was added near Arlan Gwili and the bus stop was never replaced. They agreed to put a bus stop in the parking zone outside the rugby club and to investigate, what the law guidelines are for distances from a junction for the other side, if allowed they would put a stop in the current hashed no parking zone on the opposite side of the road.
Finally there is a sign outside the st davids church opposite the old surgery, which says bus stop both sides, but drivers are refusing to stop by the bugalows by the school as there is no sign on the surgery side. The manager said phone on the day of the incident and he would deal with the drivers as they are instructed there is a stop on both sides and have no reason not to stop.
