Hendy News

The Pontarddulais and Hendy District Carnival held their 39th carnival last week, it was the wettest in its 39 year history

my column for this week has all the details and results from the carnival.

Hendy Rugby Club

There was a marquee charity event there, the carnival weekend which was a huge success. I’ve spoken to the organisers who want to say thank you on behalf of the Haematology Cancer Unit at Singleton Hospital for the huge support from the whole community who supported, and a special thank you to the Llanelli Male Voice Choir for the superb performance. Money has still been coming in so a final total could not be given, However as soon as the total is realised and presented there will be an official letter from the hospital unit, which will be displayed on the notice board in the local club.

Memorial concert

The famous Pontarddulais Male Voice Choir will be performing a concert in their home town in the school leisure centre on the 21st July, the Noel Davies Memorial concert; will also feature Lleisiau LLiw and Nicky Mead on the Trumpet. Tickets cost £7 from any chorister or Lyn Anthony on 01792 884279, further details can be found on the choirs web page http://www.pontarddulaismalechoir.com/choir_concerts.php?concertID=28

Pontarddulais and Hendy Carnival

It was tremendous to see the people of Pontarddulais and Hendy pulling together to make the carnival a success, even though the weather was very bad indeed. Everyone deserves praise for turning out in such bad conditions, it was the wettest carnival in its 39 year history, The organisers would like to thank all the floats, walkers, stall holders, bands, lorry drivers and suppliers of the lorries and the people who provided the entertainment, a big thank you, also goes to the shops for entering the window dressing competition - a magnificent effort was made by one and all

Pontarddulais Walking Club

Would like to thank Norman Richards for leading last weeks walk to the coastal town of Porthcawl.Highlight of the trek was the visit to Sker House, reputedly Wales most haunted house. Alan Richards related to the group about the mystery of the Maid of Sker which was famously made into a book by R.D.Blackmore.The group also paid their respects at the memorial site at Sker Point to the 39 crew members of the SS Samtampa, and 8 Lifeboat crew members of Mumbles Lifeboat, who all lost their lives on one fateful night in 1947. Other walks which members would like to thank leaders Peter and Allison Walters for leading, took place in the South Beacons. The walk included the Mountain of Cefn Yr Ystrad and its environs. The group had a stunning lunch stop at Bryniau Gleision overlooking the Talybont reservoir. The majestic and spectacular scenery on such a fine summer’s day was enjoyed by all the trekkers. New members would be welcomed some spectacular photos from past walks can be seen on the web site http://www.pontarddulaiswalkingclub.com/
