Anniversary dinner

 

The Pontarddulais walking club will hold its anniversary dinner at Pontarddulais Rugby Club on Friday, September 7th.

Nine intrepid members of Pontarddulais Walking Club successfully completed the Three Peaks Challenge of Abergavenny last weekend. This 20 mile arduous trek which included the three peaks of the Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid Fawr were accomplished by the following members Peter and Allison Walters, Kevin Anderson, Alan Richards, Brian Lloyd, Terry Evans, Margaret Thomas, Anne Chalke and Geraint Owain Price. A special thanks to Anne Chalke for leading the group on this trek

 

Community Police and the Community Council

 

This week the local councillors and the local police team have met on Wednesday to discuss policing priorities, the next meeting will be on 2nd October at 5pm and this meeting will be open to the public.

 

Consultation

 

There are plans underway with Hendy Pool and the Carmarthen County Council Senior Youth Worker and the community policing team, to have a detached youth bus and youth workers in Hendy in October, so that consultation with the youth of Hendy can be looked at.

 

 

Welsh lessons starting in September

 

The university of Wales is starting welsh classes in September, there will be twelve locations throughout Carmarthen where courses will be run, each venue will hold classes two evenings a week, Hendy school will be holding a course, which will task thirty weeks to complete, the emphasis will be on conversational Welsh and this course will give the ideal momentum for learning a new language, the lessons are held during school term times. Traffic issues in Bryngwilli Road

 

At several of the previous MP surgeries a number of residents have attended complaining about the volumes of traffic using the m4 junction and the timing of traffic lights and the queues at peak times, the county officer has confirmed by email that residents have been contacting them since 2005 and they have investigated the issue on several occasions in the past, The county council have agreed to come out to Bryngwili road to meet local councillors to discus these issues in October

 

Pig roast

Barclay’s Bank employee Kevin Lugg recently organised a fundraising event in aid of Lymphoma and Leukaemia Fund (Wales). Kevin raised £1,292 by organising a Hog Roast at Pontarddulais Show Ground. Monies raised were increased by the sum of £750 by Barclays bank as part of their funding Community investment programme, bringing the total to £2,042. Kevin would like to thank everyone who bought tickets from him to support the event. Jeff Lane Area Manager for Barclays would also like to thank the community of Hendy and Pontarddulais for their support and stated, “At Barclays we strive to strengthen local communities in which we live and work by supporting a range of causes from local schools to centres for older people.  This is a fantastic example of Barclay’s staff fundraising with the local community to achieve something which we hope will make a real and lasting difference”.

Air Ambulance Event

 

Following the successful August 2006 fundraising event at the Red Lion, Councillors Lynne and Bill Vonk and a small number of locals decided to hold a second event this August and choose the Air Ambulance as the recipients of the proceeds of the weekend. Once again the local businesses of the community gave generously giving goods and services to auction off and raffle, so many items were given that the two day event held on August 10th and 11th was extended by holding a further auction on bank holiday Monday, The first two days at the Red Lion was very successful, with a further £400 being collected at the auction on bank holiday Monday. The Air Ambulance were, counting their own money boxes which were placed in local shops and businesses so the final total is yet to be realised. Tony would like to thank all the local businesses for their generosity and a big thank you to the regulars who attended the three days and gave generously
