Helen Mary is calling for trading standards to make an example of law breakers

Well I don't know where to start or what to say

So I think I will start with last week, Last Tuesday I went to the Assembly to help Usdaw raise the issue about respect for shop workers, Its a campaign that has been ongoing since 2002,

I've done lots of street, and town campaigning to help Usdaw raise the profile about thier campaigns and the issue about violence to shopworkers

With Nia Griffith and former Llanelli AM Catherine Thomas

The union has a theme every year to highlight the issue, like Give Abuse the Red Card, when there had been a magor football tournament

And the latest visit to the Assembly last week was themed

Keep Your Cool at Christmas

We invited Assembly Members to sign our Christmas Card as pledge to help address the issue around abuse and I understand some 22 Assembly Members signed up including Joyce Watson. And Llanelli's AM Helen Mary

Anyway imaging my shock after Helen had pledged her support to read Saturdays Evening Post on the Front page she was calling for trading standards to punish the shops and workers that were caught in the recent alcohol sale sting to youngsters, 198 test purchases were made and 100 failed intotal 57 shops failed the tests and its not suprising really because surveys have shown that the biggest cause of violence and abuse to shop workers happens when they ask for ID or refuse alcohol sales.

This is a huge issue for retail staff and the sheer number of failures just highlights the difficulty the shop workers are under, when we ask for ID we are often subjected to abuse, only this month 3 young men came to the till where i was helping before the shop shut at 9.55pm on a saturday night, they were already drunk, one had blood over his shirt, i asked for ID and one provided it, he was 18 and 3 months, the other two with him looked younger so i asked if they had ID and they kicked off getting abusive and swearing, security had been watching on the camera because they had walked in and were clearly unable to walk in a straight line and were quickly on the scene to support,

but had this been a corner shop with no security, would the member of staff sold the alcohol given there was one with ID or would they have stood their ground as a lone shop worker

this is why my union Usdaw has held a national respect week to highlight the issue around respect and abuse

The Usdaw survey found that:

1. Nearly 5% suffered verbal abuse every day and 13% every week
2. 43% of the abuse was for refusing sales to under-age people
3. The main cause of physical abuse was ‘angry customers’ (40%)
4. 61% of staff did not feel their employers did everything they could to protect staff from violence

further info about the unions campaign and alcohol sales issues can be found on the unions web site http://www.usdaw.org.uk/

The story was in Carmarthen edition of the Evening Post and I've scanned the main story below although she was on the front page as well, I am appalled that the Llanelli Assembly Member Helen Mary is calling for the shops and shopworkers to be prosecuted and fined, if this happens there would be 100 low paid part time workers fined and 57 shops could loose their licences which could effect jobs, don't get me wrong i'm not saying nothing should be done as the law has been broken, what i am saying is the assembly and the government should seriously look at how it is implemented, probably compulsory ID for purchase of Alcohol could be the answer, then members of the public wouldn't take exception to being asked,

or even removing the 24hour sales back to 8am to 10pm, because a lot of the problems facing shop workers happens to the nightshift workers in the early hours when customers already have had far to much to drink
