swimming pool forums

This week i had an email advising me to join a forum that talks about swimming pools in the same situation as Hendy, the emailer stated there was a story on there about swansea city council making it difficult for local swimming clubs to participate by putting up their fees for the sessions it uses

so i joined and here's my first post to the forum

Swimming Clubs have found that the Council has cut the subsidy for
hiring swimming pools. This has resulted in a financial crisis for
the Clubs who face paying charges in the region of £400 a week in
order to provide a non-profit making service to the community.

Highland Council having to pay VAT on its High Life leisure card;
this card enabled families to access a wide range of leisure services
at an affordable rate, but prices will probably have to go up after
the Council lost its court battle with the taxman.

hi

having just joined the group and reading the news about swansea

Hendy is so close to swansea that we actually have a swansea postcode
even though we are in carmarthenshire
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_west/5030872.stm
that i thought it would be appropiate to pass on a comment that was
made to our pool campaign in 2006

During August of last year the red lion in Hendy held a two day
charity auction with two llanelli tribute acts "simply red" and
"meatloaf" heading the bill, more than 130 local companies from swansea
and llanelli donated gifts to the event and more than £5,000 was
raised in the weekend. During and after the event there were lots of
local press covering and the committee had an interesting contact,
who had a very similar story to the swansea clubs.

The gentleman claimed that he was involved in the running of one of
the swimming clubs that used carmarthen county councils llanelli's
swimming pool

He also stated that their club would give their support and his best
wishes in our campaign to re-open the Hendy pool.........because he
claimed his club gave thousands of pounds to use llanelli's pool
every year, and the club had so many members that they needed more
swimming time, and their requests for more swimming time to improve
training facilities was constantly being turned down, and their costs
to hire the pools were going up. and if we were to open the club
would be looking for swimming time in Hendy as well as Llanelli

at the meeting in December 2006 this aquisation was put to the
Carmarthen County Council and this statement was not denied, they did
state that clubs would like more swim time and that llanelli pool
was already at capacity. however it did not help our campaign the
county still stated as per link
http://www.carmarthenshire.gov.uk/agendas/eng/REGN20061214/REP05.HTM
that it would not be feasible for carmarthen to invest in Hendy and
that the committee needs to consider a long term lease or see the
pool lost for ever

The committee decided after the meeting this was not an option which
is why they put a feasibilty study to tender. The pool committee will
now be meeting on tuesday 10th july to study three tender quotes and
to possibly choose one of the consultants to commission a study and
consultation. Which ever company we choose will have the contact
details of the Llanelli swimming club as it seems their plight is
very similar to the plight of the Swansea swimming clubs
