The fight to save a Llanelli lido has moved on a step with talks aimed at drafting business consultants into battle.Campaigners bidding to save the 75-year-old outdoor swimming pool in Hendy were due to meet last night to discuss the move.

They were expected to hand out a £14,000 contract aimed at finding out what villagers want to see happen to the pool - and if those hopes can be realised.

It comes five years after Carmarthenshire Council condemned the facility to closure with claims it was no longer financially viable.

However, Hendy Pool Committee chairman Calfyn Evans said: "There is a huge amount of support for the pool project.

"It is very important to the village - from the old people who remember it being started, to the young people who are missing out on a fantastic day out."

The 30m by 12m pool was built by out-of-work miners by hand, with pickaxes, shovels and coal drams from nearby mines. But with its 2002 closure, after cracks appeared in its walls, Wales was left with only one historic lido left open - in Brynaman.

The unpopular move saw more than 2,800 people sign a petition in 2005, while meetings on the issue have drawn audiences of 200.

The campaign has won the support of town MP Nia Griffith, AM Helen Mary Jones, and former town AM Catherine Jones.

However, the year after the petition, the spectre of a concrete-filled pool was raised when the county council confirmed it wouldn't sanction refurbishment works.

It called for the committee to take on responsibility for the pool and look for its own funding.

The county council's executive board member for regeneration and leisure, councillor Clive Scourfield, said his authority would only offer its advice and support.

Nevertheless, Mr Evans is hoping the feasibility study will lead to a £420,000 regeneration project.

"We do recognise there may be issues of sustainability in regards to the running costs, maintenance and volunteer commitment over a long period of time," he said.

"We also recognise the site might be better used for an alternative leisure amenity.

"Perhaps there could be an artificial pitch, tennis courts, a paddling pool or, at the other extreme, an indoor heated swimming pool.

"One way or another, we will save it if the feasibility study allows."
