A Hendy man wants the town's postcode changed so its residents can obtain cheaper insurance.Ken Lewis, of Heol Llwyn Bedw, believes changing the postcode could save residents hundreds of pounds.

"We live in a rural area but Royal Mail places us in Swansea which is nine or 10 miles away," he said.

"The insurance companies charge us higher rates because of the postcode.

"I believe there is more crime in Swansea than the rural areas so we are charged more for insurance."

Mr Lewis, a father of two, said he had discussed the issue with others in Hendy and they believe he has a valid point.

"My brother-in-law who lives in Llangennech saves £100 each year," he said.

"We are talking about a lot of money if someone lived in the same village for 40 years."

Assembly member for Llanelli, Helen Mary Jones said: "I have been campaigning hard on this matter for the last eight years.

"I felt the Post Office has been wholly unreasonable but I will continue to put pressure on them.

"The postcode issue has a direct effect on people in the area with regards to insurance and delivery of goods.

"I will continue to fight hard on this issue."

Llanelli Labour MP Nia Griffith said: "I have contacted a number of insurance companies and many have different ways of calculating their charges.

"My advice is to ask companies if the price would change if there was a different postcode.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "The postal address is a sorting and routing instruction for our equipment and staff, and therefore it may not always be a geographically accurate description of where a property is located.

"We are aware that other businesses use our postcode information for other purposes. However, this is a matter for those companies and their associations.

"We would make a change to the last two characters of a postcode in exceptional circumstances.

"To do this we require evidence that all those affected by the change are in favour of it."
