hendy news

Here's next weeks news column

Hendy School

During the school holidays the county council installed new fire exits, there have been complaints and concerns, by residents and parents that these new exits are dangerous and do not comply with the disability access act. The school governors called an emergency meeting to discuss the issues raised, so that the concerns can be raised with the county council who funded the new accesses.

Hendy Post office

The Hendy Post Office on Iscoed Road, has just under gone a new refit, on the official opening day of the new extension, Bookers kindly donated a mountain bike to raffle off to raise money for the community, 115 pounds was collected and the Jonathan and Beverley raised the proceeds to £150, which was given to the under 10’s Hendy Football Squad towards a new football kit. The winner of the bike was P Gammon with N Lock winning the second prize of a football jersey.

Pontarddulais Walking

Nearly thirty club members turned out for the Pontarddulais Walking Club anniversary walk. The 10 mile long walk was the original walk which was undertaken by the founder members of the club namely Alan Richards and Christopher Davies ten years ago. Unfortunately the group had to make a detour along the way, owing to the road and woods being blocked by a police investigation into a death of a young man near Troserch Woods, Llangennech. Nevertheless the group thoroughly enjoyed the local walk which included the environs of Hendy, Pontarddulais, Llanedi, Llanon and Llangennech. The group had a splendid lunch stop on the banks of the Afon Morlais at Pontsionrhydderch. The club were also informed of a future walking trek in the Lake District which will take a full week and has been arranged for next summer, the leader for this tour will be Ann Chalke.

Quiz Nights

The Hendy Rugby Club needs new members to join their squad as some of the existing team members work shifts and the squad might be occasionally low on numbers for a full squad during the seasons matches, please contact the rugby club if you are interested in joining the group.

Community Policing Team

The community policing team have installed community boxes in both Hendy and the Fforest post offices, these boxes are emptied by the police on a regular basis, if you have concerns about crime or anti sociable behaviour then please use this facility, because if the police are not told about concerns and issues they can’t not address or investigate them. Residents can leave their details or they can leave their comments anonymously but all comments will be welcomed and will be kept confidential. The community policing team are also holding a joint surgery with the local MP Nia Griffith on Wednesday 3rd October in Hendy Cricket Club at 5pm (The surgery will not be on Tuesday 2nd as reported last week)

Consultation

The Post Code Row has been on going for several years with residents and senior politicians writing to the post office and insurance companies, Hendy and the Fforest is in the county of Carmarthen but carries a Swansea Postal address and code. Ken Lewis asked for a petition or action to help address the situation after many years. There are arguments for and against a change, so we decided to conduct a survey to find the views of the residents of the both villages. Please fill out your comments and return the completed questionnaires to either the post office in the Fforest or the Hendy.

Wales Scouting Movement

The Wales Scouting movement have also drafted a survey about youngsters and the scouting movement these questionnaires can also be dropped off, into the survey boxes at the Post Office in the Fforest or Hendy.

Llanedi Community Council

It was decided at the last community meeting to place xmas lights or a tree up the Fforest, there were three possible locations discussed, The three options were to light up the fforest post office on the square, or to place a tree at the junction of heol y plas, or on the main fforest road just below the bus stop. It was decided to investigate the possibilities with costs and the practabilty of each site so that a decision could be made at the next meeting.
