Carer's Week

This week there has been a national campaign called carer's week and my union USDAW has been one of the organisations helping to raise the concerns about carer's.

and Carers Campaign

Usdaw's Supporting Parents and Carers Campaign seeks to improve the lives of workers with either parental or caring responsibilities. Around 75% of Usdaw members are either parents or carers (or both) and they tell us loud and clear that they need the Union to campaign for them.

The campaign aims to make gains through our negotiations with companies and to campaign with Government for more rights. Since it was launched in 2004 the campaign has delivered:

  • Negotiated improvements in the terms and conditions for more than two-thirds of our members.
  • New rights for parents, like extended paid maternity leave and adoptive leave.
  • New rights for carers, like the right to request flexible working and an increase in the earnings threshold for Carers Allowance.

The next Spotlight Day, Wednesday 3 June 2009, is focused on making sure working parents know about their benefit rights and understand how to go about claiming the money that's theirs.

We also want to use the day to build support for the Government's campaign to end child poverty by 2020.

Here's how you can help our campaign

Today Carmarthen County Council held an event in Llanelli which I attended, the agenda is posted below

There were a number of carer's, who bravely got up infront of the large conference, to share their personal issues and concerns.

Many revealed some intimate details of how they have cared for their loved ones, and how it has effected their lifestyle and many revealed the problems and concerns with grants funding and support.

There was a wide range of speakers, from young carers, to carers who have cared for loved ones for more than 30 years, all had moving stories to share and many asked the conference, of spectators and councillors of what questions, they should be asking the county council and polititians in the Assembly and Parliament to help all carers.

There was also an interesting booklet available at the event.

The booklet has some usefull contacts of organisations that can help and support carers

Following a very well recieved and imformative conference I left Llanelli to go to the Rangers office in Tumble to meet County Council Officers to discuss the Hendy Park regeneration project, one of the rights of way officers has been doing some work on the grant applications for the project.

Below is the master plan drawn for the regeneration of the park.

Following this meeting I then popped up to White Springs to visit my mum, as I hadn't been up there for at least three weeks, and I spent more than three hours up there catching up on news and gossip.

My niece kindly reminded me it was her birthday next week,

Whilst up there I managed to find about half a dozen photos for the web site as I promote the fishery updating their web sites etc here are just a small sample taken since my last visit,

But there's dozens more on the web sites and on the White Springs Face Book Group

After I was spoilt with some food I got home just in time to be sheaffured by Vernon, down to the Bont Rugby club, where I had a quick pint  before we both went into the carnival committee meeting.

We are both on the carnival committee and we have now managed to rope Vernon's better half onto the committee and Fran attended her very first committee meeting along with us. The carnival is fast approaching.

I'm actually looking forward to the events coming up, there's the White Springs Inter Schools Football tournament which is on next week

I enjoyed this match between the three schools last year, but I think the best event for myself last year was the Pontarddulais Town Carnival Quiz night, which will be held next Wednesday, because I was part of the winning team

So on that note I'm signing off to do some swatting on my general Knowledge in preperation for next week
